What a Labuan Bajo liveaboard actually is
A Labuan Bajo liveaboard is a multi-day trip on a boat you sleep aboard, casting off from Labuan Bajo harbour on the western tip of Flores and returning to the same pier. It is not a hotel-plus-day-boat arrangement and it is not a cruise: the vessel is your accommodation, your restaurant and your dive platform for the entire trip.
The distinction that matters commercially is where you board. Some Komodo boats depart from Bali on multi-day crossings. Most depart from here. Boarding in Labuan Bajo means you are inside the park within the hour instead of spending two days at sea getting to it — and it means your booking hinges on one thing that Bali departures do not care about: what time your flight lands.

Will your flight land in time to sail the same day?
This is the single question that ruins more Komodo trips than weather does, and almost nobody answers it before you have already paid. Komodo Airport sits about ten minutes from the harbour, so the transfer is not the constraint — the boat’s cast-off window is. Miss it and you are paying for a night in town you did not budget for.

What this means in practice. If your trip is short, fly in the day before. A 3D2N that starts with you sprinting through the terminal is a 2D2N in disguise. Departure day, landing to underway
Assuming a morning arrival and a standard morning cast-off, here is the actual sequence. Times shift with the vessel and the tide, but the order never does.

Two details people get wrong. First, most phinisi lie at anchor rather than alongside, so the last leg is by tender — hard-shell suitcases are awkward and soft bags are better. Second, the park permit is processed against your passport on the morning of departure, so the physical passport has to be with you, not in the hold bag. When your flight is delayed or cancelled
Komodo Airport closes in poor visibility and the Bali route is cancelled or diverted several times a month in the wet season. Every operator handles this differently and most do not say so until it happens to you. Ours:

Open trip or private charter from Labuan Bajo
Open trip means you buy a cabin and share the boat with other travellers on a fixed route and a fixed date. Private charter means you buy the whole vessel and set the route. Below roughly six people, the open trip is cheaper; above eight, the charter usually wins on both price and flexibility.

The charter advantage people underrate is the cast-off time. On a private boat your late flight is not a problem at all, because there is nobody else waiting.
Permits, the daily cap, and how far ahead to book
Komodo National Park runs on a daily visitor cap, and every liveaboard departing this harbour needs permits secured per person per departure date. We hold them before you sail; you never queue for anything.

Booking is a deposit to hold the cabin and the permit, with the balance due before departure. Exact deposit percentage and payment deadline are confirmed in writing when you enquire.
Labuan Bajo liveaboard prices
These are operator rates. There is no marketplace commission on top — typically 15 to 25 percent of a Komodo liveaboard price when you book through a booking platform.

Labuan Bajo liveaboard FAQ
Can I fly into Labuan Bajo and board a liveaboard the same day?
Usually yes if you land before 10:00, because the airport is about ten minutes from the harbour. Landing after midday generally means an overnight in town and boarding the next morning. Send us your flight number and we will check it against the specific departure before you pay anything.
Do liveaboards leave from Labuan Bajo every day?
Shared open trips run on a fixed calendar, most days in high season and less often in the shoulder months. Private charters run on your dates, provided the vessel is free and a park permit is available for that day.
Should I fly in the day before my liveaboard?
For anything shorter than four nights, yes. A short trip that begins with a rushed transfer loses a meaningful share of its water time, and the Bali route is cancelled often enough in the wet season that a buffer day is cheap insurance.
What happens if my flight to Labuan Bajo is cancelled?
We move you to the next departure with a free cabin and you pay only the rate difference if there is one. If nothing suitable is available we refund the unused nights. If we cancel for weather or safety, you choose between a full reschedule and a full refund.
Is it cheaper to board in Labuan Bajo or in Bali?
Per day actually inside the park, Labuan Bajo is significantly cheaper, because a Bali departure spends roughly half the trip in transit. Crossings are worth booking when you want the passage itself, not when you want Komodo.
How far in advance should I book a Labuan Bajo liveaboard?
Three to six months for July and August, three to four months for the December to February manta window, and four to eight weeks in the March to May shoulder. The constraint is the park’s daily visitor cap as much as the boats.
Do I need to arrange park permits myself?
No. We secure every permit before departure and process the manifest against your passport on the morning you sail. Bring the physical passport in your hand luggage rather than your hold bag.
Can I leave luggage behind while I sail?
Yes. Large bags stay in secure storage in Labuan Bajo and you take a soft bag aboard, which matters because most phinisi lie at anchor and the last leg is by tender.
