What luxury actually means on a phinisi
The word is used loosely on this coast. Almost every boat in Labuan Bajo is advertised as luxury, including hulls with shared bathrooms and one generator. Here is what actually separates the tiers, so you can check any quote you receive — including ours.
It is the whole boat, not a cabin
A luxury cruise means chartering the vessel. Nobody else boards. The itinerary is written around your group, and if you want to stay a second night at Padar instead of moving on, the captain does that.
Two generators, not one
A single generator means air conditioning stops during servicing. On a three or four night charter that is the difference between an inconvenience and a ruined night. Every Luxury-tier hull we charter carries redundancy.
Crew that outnumbers nothing
A dedicated chef rather than a captain who also cooks, a divemaster or guide, and deck crew. On the larger hulls the crew count approaches the guest count.
En-suite in every cabin
Hot water, air conditioning, and a bathroom per cabin — not a shared head at the end of a corridor. This is the single most common gap between a boat marketed as luxury and one that is.
Tenders that actually work
Two tenders means one can run guests to a beach while the other stays with the boat. One tender means queuing.
A route, not a loop
Charters can run Komodo only, or push north to Sangeang, or west toward Sumbawa and Saleh Bay. Shared trips cannot.
When a private charter is the wrong call
Chartering a whole boat only makes sense above a certain group size. Below about eight people you are usually paying for empty cabins, and a private cabin on a scheduled Komodo liveaboard gives you the same islands, the same anchorages and the same food for a fraction of the money. The gap closes fast at ten and disappears entirely at fourteen.
The other case where it is the wrong call is a tight schedule. A charter earns its price through flexibility — waiting out weather, holding an anchorage, moving dinner two hours later. If your dates are fixed and your route is standard, you are paying a premium for freedom you will not use.
What we will say plainly: tell us your group size and dates before you ask for a charter quote. If a scheduled departure serves you better we will point you at one, even though it earns us less.
Where a Komodo luxury cruise goes
Every charter starts from Labuan Bajo. From there the park is four to six hours of sailing across, so a three night charter covers it comfortably and a four night charter adds the northern islands.
Padar, Pink Beach, Komodo
Padar for the ridge and three bays, Pantai Merah for the pink sand, Loh Liang or Rinca for the ranger walk. Every charter covers these; the difference is timing. We put you at Padar before the day boats arrive.
Manta Point & Taka Makassar
Manta Point at the tidal change and the sandbar at Taka Makassar when the light is right. Charters can wait for conditions rather than hitting a fixed slot.
Gili Lawa & Sangeang
Gili Lawa for the sunset hike and Sangeang, the active volcano off Sumbawa, on longer charters. Almost no shared trip goes this far north.
Saleh Bay & Moyo
Five nights and up opens the western route: whale sharks at Saleh Bay and the Mata Jitu waterfall on Moyo Island, ending at Lombok if you want a crossing rather than a loop.
Per night or per trip: the number that trips people up
Most charter sites in Labuan Bajo quote per night. We quote per trip. A boat advertised at USD 3,500 per night is USD 10,500 over a three night charter, not USD 3,500 — and that is the single most common reason two quotes look wildly different when they are actually close. Before comparing anything, convert both to the same basis and confirm whether park fees sit inside or outside the number.
The other half of the arithmetic is group size. Charter price is fixed per vessel, so the cost per head falls as cabins fill. Our own booking data puts the crossover at around eight guests: below that a private cabin on a scheduled departure is cheaper, above it the charter wins and keeps winning.

Best time
April to November is the settled season and July to August is the peak, when the water is calmest and every anchorage is busiest. September and October give nearly the same conditions with far fewer boats, which matters more on a charter than on a shared trip because you are paying for the anchorage as much as the boat. December to March brings the northwest monsoon.
Getting to the boat
Fly into Komodo Airport at Labuan Bajo; the harbour is a short transfer and we collect you. Arrive the day before departure rather than the same morning — a delayed flight costs you a night of a boat you have already paid for in full, and that is the single most expensive mistake on this page.
Group size and cabins
Luxury hulls run 5 to 10 cabins. Cabin count, not length, decides how many people sleep comfortably; a 40 metre boat with 6 cabins carries fewer guests than a 30 metre boat with 10. Tell us the group and we will match the hull rather than upsell the metres.

Can we set our own itinerary?
Yes, within weather and park regulations. The captain will tell you what is sailable on your dates. Anchorages, timing and meal hours are yours; the park entry date is fixed by your permit.
Are park fees included?
No. Komodo National Park entrance and ranger fees are set by the park authority, charged per person, and paid on arrival. Every visitor needs a permit arranged in advance through a licensed operator, so we file yours once you confirm.
What is the best month?
April to November. July and August are calmest but busiest; September and October give similar conditions with far fewer boats at each anchorage. The route does not run reliably from December to March.
