Alor is the last serious dive frontier in East Nusa Tenggara. Black volcanic sand hides rhinopias and mimic octopus, the Pantar Strait funnels cold nutrient-rich water past coral walls, and the hills above Kalabahi are still home to the Abui. It is also the Indonesian destination most often oversold. This page tells you what the diving actually demands before it tells you what it costs.

What actually makes Alor different
Three currents meet around Alor and Pantar. Water from the Flores Sea, the Savu Sea and the deep Banda basin squeezes through the Pantar Strait, and the temperature drops sharply when it does. That single fact explains most of what divers experience here: unusually dense macro life on the black sand, sharks and pelagics holding station on the exposed points, and thermoclines that will find any gap in your exposure protection.
The second difference is topography. Alor and Pantar are volcanic, so the reefs sit on lava slopes and steep drop-offs rather than the gentle limestone shelves of Raja Ampat. Walls start shallow and keep going. Pinnacles rise from deep water with no gradual approach.
The third is that almost nobody is here. On a ten-night route you will rarely see another dive boat. That isolation is the appeal, and it is also the reason the itinerary is written around weather windows rather than fixed dates.

Alor itineraries are built from four clusters. A ten-night route usually touches all four; a shorter charter concentrates on the Pantar Strait and Kalabahi.

Kalabahi Bay is the reason serious macro photographers book Alor at all. Conditions in that bay — cold, silty, nutrient-loaded — make it one of a handful of places on earth where rhinopias is a realistic target rather than a lucky story.
What you will actually see
Alor is a macro destination that occasionally behaves like a big-animal destination. Setting expectations honestly matters more here than on any other route we run.
Reliable on almost every trip: nudibranchs in real variety, ghost pipefish, frogfish, leaf fish, anemonefish, reef octopus, cuttlefish, moray eels, schooling fusiliers and surgeonfish, hawksbill turtles, and pygmy seahorses on the Maumere gorgonians.
Realistic targets that take work: rhinopias in Kalabahi Bay, mimic and wunderpus octopus at Waiwowan, harlequin shrimp, bumblebee and tiger shrimp, stargazers and demon stingers on the night dives at Padang Pasir.
Seasonal and lucky: mola mola during the cold upwelling in August and September, grey and whitetip reef sharks on the exposed points, eagle rays and schooling jacks at Bacatan, and passing cetaceans. Alor sits on a migration corridor, so dolphin pods are common and pilot whales, sperm whales and very occasionally orca are seen from the deck.
What Alor does not deliver is a reliable manta season. If mantas are the reason you are travelling, book Komodo instead and keep Alor for a later trip.
Sample 10-night route: Maumere to Kalabahi
Option A — the scheduled 8-day / 7-night departure, round-trip Kalabahi. This is the itinerary our fleet publishes for Alor. It is the version you can book on a fixed date.

Note the Ternate on day six is Ternate Island in North Pantar, part of the Alor group. It is not Ternate in North Maluku, roughly a thousand kilometres away. Both appear in dive listings and the two get confused often.
Option B — the extended 11-night crossing, Maumere to Kalabahi. A private-charter routing that starts west in Flores and works east. It adds Maumere, Adonara, Lembata and Kawula to the standard week. Priced as a charter with a repositioning leg rather than as a scheduled departure.

Either way the route is weather-led. Every Alor itinerary is subject to the captain reading the current, and we would rather move a site than force it.
A day on board
The rhythm is built around four dives and the tide table, not the clock. A typical full day runs like this.

Briefings on the Pantar Strait sites include an explicit current plan and an abort plan. Tenders stay in the water for the duration of every drift dive, and every guest carries an SMB.
The phinisi that run Alor
Alor is a long-range route, so we deploy vessels with the tankage and tender capacity to stay out without resupply. Not every boat in the fleet is suited to it. These four are.

Safety and camera-deck inventories differ boat by boat, so we send the inventory for your specific vessel with the quotation rather than publishing one fleet-wide list. Cabin plans and photographs come with it.

Alor is priced per night rather than as a fixed package, because the length of the route moves with the season and the sea. Rates below are in US dollars, quoted by our own office. There is no marketplace commission in these numbers.

Why Alor costs more per night than Komodo
Because the boat is not there. Most of the fleet works Komodo from May to October and Raja Ampat from November to April. Alor sits outside both, so reaching it means a repositioning leg, and that leg is priced. On Mischief Voyage the mechanism is published rather than buried: Komodo runs at USD 8,000 per night, the Maumere to Alor routing at USD 9,500, and the repositioning days themselves are billed at a reduced relocation rate of USD 4,750 per night instead of the full charter rate.
Worth knowing before you compare quotes. An operator that shows one flat nightly figure for Alor has either absorbed the repositioning into the headline number or is going to add it later. Ask which.
Nayara is the only vessel on this route with published per-cabin Alor rates. The others sit on a long-range schedule rather than a fixed calendar, so their cabins are quoted per departure. Single occupancy adds 50% of the per-night rate. Children under six travel free sharing with parents, six to eleven at half rate. Group discounts from six guests and back-to-back rates for guests continuing to the Banda Sea are quoted on request.
Bookings confirm on a 50% deposit payable within three days of the invoice, with the balance due 90 days before departure. Inside 90 days the booking is paid in full at the time it is made.
What is included, and what is not
Included in the rate: full-board accommodation on a double-occupancy basis, up to four dives a day with tanks, weights and air fills, dive guides at a maximum of four guests per guide, airport and harbour transfers on embarkation and disembarkation days, drinking water, tea, coffee, soft drinks and fruit, the Abui village visit, and onboard kayaks and paddleboards.
Not included: domestic and international flights, marine park and port fees, fuel surcharge where applicable, nitrox, equipment rental, alcoholic drinks, laundry, dive and travel insurance covering open-ocean diving, and crew gratuities.
Because Maumere and Kalabahi are different airports, Alor requires two separate one-way domestic tickets rather than a return. Budget for that when you compare our rate against a round-trip Komodo itinerary.
Fees payable on board
Alor has no single national park ticket the way Komodo does. The entrance fee is agreed per vessel, it covers the handling charge and the mandatory donation to local villages, and it is not the same number on every boat. Two of our own vessels publish figures more than twice apart. We tell you which one applies to yours before you pay it.

August and September carry the coldest water and the best macro. April and May are the more comfortable choice if you feel the cold.
Alor compared with our other destinations
Divers rarely choose Alor first. They choose it after Komodo or Raja Ampat, once macro has become the point. This is the honest comparison.

Who Alor is not for
We would rather lose a booking than put the wrong diver on this route. Alor is not the right trip if any of these apply to you.
- You have fewer than 50 logged dives, or your dives have all been in benign conditions.
- You are uncomfortable with negative entries and being swept away from the entry point with no chance of returning to it.
- You dive in a 3 mm shorty and would rather not carry a hood. Thermoclines here are genuinely cold.
- You want mantas and big animals as the headline. Komodo delivers that far more reliably.
- Your buoyancy is not yet fine enough to hover over silt without destroying the visibility for the rest of the group.
Snorkellers and non-divers are welcome on a private charter, but the scheduled Alor route is built around four dives a day and long stretches at sea.
Exposure protection and gear
The single most common mistake on an Alor trip is under-dressing. Guests arrive from Raja Ampat in a 3 mm shorty and are cold by the third dive.

Bring a reef hook, an SMB with at least six metres of line, and a loud surface signalling device. On the drift sites these are not optional extras.
Getting to the boat
Eastbound trips board at Maumere (airport code MOF) on Flores and finish at Kalabahi (ARD) on Alor. Some charters run round-trip from Maumere, and a few link through Labuan Bajo (LBJ).
- Fly into Bali (DPS) or Jakarta (CGK) first. Both connect to Maumere, usually on a morning departure.
- Arrive at least one full day before boarding. Domestic delays and volcanic-ash closures around Lewotobi are common enough that we treat same-day connections as a risk, not an option.
- Garuda currently allows an additional 23 kg for dive equipment on these routes. Carry your certification card and be ready to show that the excess is dive gear.
- Book your international return for at least one day after disembarkation. The last dives finish around midday on the final full day, which protects your no-fly interval.
The Abui village visit
Above Kalabahi, the Abui still live in hilltop settlements with pyramid-roofed houses. The visit on our itinerary is arranged directly with the village head, and the fee goes to the village rather than to an intermediary.
If you would like to bring something for the children, the useful items are pencils, sharpeners, exercise books, crayons and clothes. Please do not bring anything wrapped in plastic, plastic toys or balloons — there is no waste disposal on the island and it simply ends up on the reef. Photography is welcome, but ask before photographing individuals, particularly during the dance.
How booking works
Four steps, and you deal with our office throughout.
- Enquire. Tell us your dates, how many divers, and your certification level. We reply with availability, the exact rate and the cabin plan.
- Hold. We hold your cabin for seven days at no cost while you check flights into Maumere.
- Deposit. Twenty-five percent confirms the booking. The balance is due sixty days before departure.
- Prepare. You receive the pre-trip pack: gear list, equipment rental form, medical statement, insurance requirements and the recommended flight routing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Alor suitable for beginner divers?
No. Alor is an advanced destination. Most sites in the Pantar Strait involve strong current and cold thermoclines, and several require a negative entry. We ask for a minimum of 50 logged dives and recent experience in current.
What are the chances of seeing rhinopias?
Good, but never guaranteed. Kalabahi Bay is one of the most reliable places in the world for rhinopias, and our guides work the same sites every season. On a ten-night route in August or September most groups find at least one.
How cold does the water actually get?
Surface temperature sits between 27 and 29 °C. In the Pantar Strait, upwelling brings it down to 23 °C routinely and below 21 °C in a sharp thermocline. Plan for a 5 mm suit and a hood.
Can I combine Alor with another destination?
Yes. The most common combination is Alor with the Banda Sea in the same season, since the routes share a weather window. Alor and Komodo can also be linked through Flores on a private charter.
Is nitrox available?
Yes, on request and at extra cost. It must be pre-booked before the trip because we carry a limited compressor capacity on the eastern routes.
Are there non-diving activities?
Kayaking, paddleboarding, beach landings, the Abui village visit and dolphin watching from the deck. Alor sits on a cetacean migration corridor and pods are seen regularly between dives.
Do you take snorkellers?
On a private charter, yes. The scheduled route is built around four dives a day, so a snorkeller travelling alone would spend a lot of time waiting.
